Nairobi: Bandari Football Club Head Coach, Charles Okere, has expressed confidence in the team’s preparations for the new Kenya Premier League (KPL) season, emphasizing the importance of psychological readiness as the technical bench concludes its pre-season programme.
According to Kenya News Agency, Okere shared that the club’s six-to-eight-week pre-season schedule is wrapping up successfully, allowing the team to now concentrate on mental preparedness. He highlighted that despite the challenges, the comprehensive preparation period has been beneficial. “We are grateful because our preparations have progressed well. The period we had set aside, six to eight weeks, is coming to an end, and at this stage, it becomes more of a psychological matter,” Okere said.
Discussing team dynamics, the coach noted that the squad, comprising several new signings, has been working together for nearly six weeks, leading to improved cohesion. Okere emphasized the indistinguishable integration of newcomers during training sessions.
When questioned about the broader landscape of Kenyan football, Okere reiterated his commitment to preparing players and urged football authorities to resolve off-field issues affecting clubs. He mentioned that ongoing uncertainties, including legal disputes, have posed psychological and logistical challenges for teams.
Okere also spoke on player development, acknowledging Bandari’s history of contributing players to the national team, Harambee Stars. He expressed optimism that more players, including promising young forward Lawrence Okoth, would receive national team call-ups this season.
Addressing the club’s preparation strategies, Okere discussed the use of test matches and sports science. He explained that friendlies help assess players under match conditions and provide an opportunity to instill game laws and nutritional education. Okere praised Bandari’s investment in video analysis and nutrition programs, essential components in enhancing player performance.
Okere, who is in his first season at the helm following Bernard Mwalala’s departure, will lead the team alongside Assistant Coach Elvis Valdo. As Bandari heads into the new campaign, they aim to secure their first major trophy in years, commencing their KPL journey against AFC Leopards, Mwalala’s new club.
