Affordable Housing Programme Commences in West Pokot with Sh685 Million Project in Sigor

Sigor:West Pokot The Affordable Housing Programme (AHP) has officially launched in West Pokot County, with the Sigor Constituency becoming the first area to benefit from the initiative. The project faced initial delays due to challenges in land acquisition but has now commenced in the Runo area of Weiwei Ward along the Marich Pass-Sigor-Lomut-Tot Highway.

According to Kenya News Agency, the project will see the construction of 305 housing units at a cost of Sh685 million, with an expected completion timeline of 18 months. The State Department for Lands, Housing and Urban Development has handed over the construction site to Mtelo Enterprises Limited, the assigned contractor.

West Pokot County Commissioner David Saruni emphasized the economic transformation expected from the project, highlighting its potential to stimulate economic activities, create employment opportunities, and attract new investments. He noted the strategic positioning of the area along the newly upgraded highway, which links West Pokot to neighboring counties, thereby opening alternative transport routes.

The project is the first of its kind in the county, with plans for additional projects in Kacheliba, Alale, Kapenguria, and South Pokot. Residents are encouraged to take ownership of the project, which aims to foster interaction and exchange of ideas through the housing units.

Jeremiah Miaro, County Director of the State Department for Lands, Housing and Urban Development, mentioned a similar project in Kacheliba Town, also featuring 305 units and additional facilities. The government has invested nearly Sh2.4 billion in West Pokot through various initiatives, including the Affordable Housing and Economic Stimulus Programme markets.

Weiwei Ward MCA David Moiben expressed support for the housing project, noting it as a significant development investment in the county. He urged the government to consider establishing higher learning institutions in the area and advised against selling land, which could impact economic security.

Lands CEC Martin Lotee praised President William Ruto for initiating development projects in the region and highlighted the benefits of improved infrastructure, such as reduced traffic and accidents.

Local residents, including David Nang’oria and Clare Chepkorir, welcomed the project, citing its potential to provide income-generating opportunities and mark development in a historically marginalized area. The housing project is expected to complement other ongoing developments, including a students’ hostel and an ESP market. The area, known for pastoralism, mango production, and irrigated farming, is anticipated to benefit from improved infrastructure and market access.
