Advocates Complaints Commission Encourages Kenyans to Report Legal Misconduct

Nairobi:The Advocates Complaints Commission has called on the public to report lawyers accused of professional misconduct, emphasizing the need for increased awareness of the commission’s role in handling such complaints. Moses Cheboi, the Commission Chairperson, highlighted that many Kenyans are still unaware of the commission, which is meant to address issues involving advocates.

According to Kenya News Agency, Cheboi spoke during a stakeholder sensitisation forum in Nairobi, urging citizens to seek redress through the commission rather than relying on overburdened institutions like religious bodies and local chiefs. He noted that the commission, despite its longstanding presence, remains unfamiliar to many, thus limiting access to its services.

Cheboi underscored the importance of public education on lodging complaints, identifying qualified advocates, and understanding the professional standards expected within the legal field. He advised the public to use the commission’s website for information and complaint submissions, which can be done without visiting its Nairobi office.

Furthermore, Cheboi stressed the necessity of verifying an advocate’s qualifications before engaging their services and recommended that clients consider a lawyer’s specialisation to ensure expertise in handling specific cases. He also highlighted the importance of agreeing on legal fees and terms at the outset to prevent misunderstandings.

Nairobi North Sub-Region County Commissioner Simon Osumba supported the initiative, stating that public awareness of the commission’s services is crucial for directing grievances effectively. Osumba also encouraged Nairobi residents to engage peacefully during the upcoming general election period, promoting tolerance and respect for differing opinions.

The sensitisation forum aimed to clarify the commission’s role in fostering accountability and providing channels for addressing complaints against advocates. The commission continues its outreach across the country, working to educate the public about its mandate and services.
