Nairobi:The Kenyan government has officially sent off 27 graduates from Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions to take up job opportunities in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. This initiative is part of a broader effort to connect Kenyan TVET graduates to international job markets.
According to Kenya News Agency, Dr. Esther Muoria, Principal Secretary in the State Department for Technical and Vocational Education and Training, emphasized the government’s commitment to transforming technical training into tangible employment both locally and internationally. During a flag-off ceremony in Nairobi, Muoria highlighted the government’s strategic shift towards equipping young people with practical skills and creating pathways for their employment after graduation.
The 27 graduates will be employed on construction sites in Dubai, taking on roles such as welders, electricians, plumbers, and ICT technicians, areas where their skills are in high demand. Muoria noted the importance of these international opportunities for the graduates to gain additional skills and experience, contributing to Kenya’s industrialisation agenda upon their return.
Muoria also pointed out Kenya’s investment in local development projects, which underscores the need for a skilled workforce. She encouraged the graduates to view their assignments as opportunities to enhance their professional skills and contribute to Kenya’s economic development. The PS highlighted the positive international reputation Kenyan workers have established, leading to repeated interest from international recruiters.
The government is not only focusing on Dubai; there are emerging opportunities in the United Kingdom and aboard Viking cruise ships. Muoria urged the graduates to utilize government support services for financial planning and investment while working abroad to ensure they return with meaningful investments.
The Ministry of Education, in collaboration with other state departments, continues to streamline processes such as passport issuance to facilitate these international employment opportunities. Muoria called on more young Kenyans to enroll in TVET institutions to support the country’s development ambitions through a skilled workforce.
