Kitui: Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi on Friday commissioned several Last Mile Electricity Connectivity projects in Kitui Rural Constituency, situated in Kitui County.
According to Kenya News Agency, the CS unveiled the Musosya Last Mile Electricity Connectivity project at Musosya village in Kisasi Sub County, Kitui Rural constituency. He announced that the government has allocated Sh2.5 billion to connect over 20,000 households to electricity across all eight constituencies in Kitui county. Wandayi highlighted that the Kitui Rural constituency project would receive Sh430 million from the total allocation, supporting projects throughout the county.
Furthermore, Wandayi explained that the Sh430 million would fund at least 40 Last Mile Electricity Connectivity projects in the Kitui Rural constituency during this financial year. He emphasized that the program aims to connect households that have remained off-grid for years, boosting economic activities, enhancing public lighting for impr
oved security, and elevating the quality of life for the beneficiaries. The CS also reiterated that the national government’s Last Mile Electricity Connectivity programme signifies its commitment to inclusive and equitable development for all citizens.
Accompanying the Energy Cabinet Secretary was Member of Parliament for Kitui Rural Constituency, David Mwalika Mboni. Mboni expressed gratitude to the government for the funds, noting that his constituency received the largest share among the eight constituencies in Kitui county. He pledged to work closely with the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum to ensure the seamless implementation of the 40 Last Mile Electricity Connectivity projects across his constituency. Additionally, Mboni revealed plans for the national government to build a modern market at Kisasi trading centre for Sh7 million to boost trade and improve the working environment for local traders. On education, he discussed intentions to install floor tiles in local primary school classrooms to enhan
ce hygiene and provide a better learning atmosphere for pupils.
Kitui County Commissioner Erastus Mbui, also present at the event, addressed the issue of school attendance, noting that 46 percent of learners in the Kitui rural constituency had not reported to their schools. He urged parents with grade 10 learners to ensure their children report to senior secondary schools immediately, as directed by the President, regardless of financial obstacles such as school fees or uniforms. Mbui instructed local chiefs and assistants to assist in identifying and ensuring school attendance for absent learners. He stressed that financial constraints should not prevent children from accessing education and mentioned that arrangements would be made to support affected families. The County Commissioner also called on residents to maintain peace and safeguard government projects, highlighting the importance of stability and cooperation for sustained development.
