Kakamega: A seven-day free specialized surgical outreach programme at the Kakamega County General and Referral Hospital (KCRH) has benefited 150 patients, with an additional 20 surgeries scheduled before the exercise concludes.
According to Kenya News Agency, the outreach was conducted through a partnership between the County Government of Kakamega and a Non-Governmental Organization, Operation International-USA. This collaboration brought together international and local medical specialists to provide free surgical services to patients who would otherwise be unable to afford treatment.
Kakamega County Governor Fernandes Barasa praised the medical teams for their commitment to improving access to specialized healthcare services. The programme involved 30 medical specialists from the United States led by Dr. Ian Otinga, working alongside 106 healthcare professionals from Kakamega County under the leadership of the Hospital’s Medical Superintendent, Dr. Christian Lamba.
Patients from all 12 Sub-counties in Kakamega County, as well as neighboring counties, benefited from specialized procedures, including head and neck surgery, plastic surgery, craniofacial surgery, and general surgery. Dr. Barasa highlighted that the initiative reflects the County government’s commitment to expanding access to quality and affordable healthcare through partnerships with development and medical organizations.
The Governor emphasized that such collaborations play a key role in strengthening specialized healthcare services while easing the financial burden on vulnerable patients requiring life-changing surgical interventions. He also expressed appreciation to Operation International-USA and other healthcare partners for their continued support in improving healthcare outcomes for residents of Kakamega County.
