Why you shouldn’t twist your hair daily

Q: I enjoy wearing my hair in a loose afro or in twist-outs. To prevent matting and tangling I moisturise my hair and put it in several twists daily before bed. Is this over-manipulation? And if so, should I just braid my hair with extensions and forget about it?

A: Celebrity stylist Felicia Leatherwood commented on this during her recent trip to Kenya. It is vital to protect your hair and preserve the style when sleeping hence the need to twist.

However, depending on the size and tightness of your twists, doing it daily might be too much as this could lead to your hair breaking and shedding. Instead, twist your hair no more than a few times a week and sleep with a satin bonnet to prevent tangling.
