Busia: Youth in Busia County have been urged to exercise ethical and responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI), as the country approaches the next General Election. Speaking during a Youth Leadership Summit at Kamuriai ACK church Teso North, the Digital Access Programme Lead at the British High Commission, Charles Juma, cautioned young people against misuse of AI tools to spread misinformation, disinformation, and malformation. He emphasized the responsibility of young individuals to utilize technology wisely.
According to Kenya News Agency, Juma challenged the youth to harness the potential of AI to improve their lives rather than misuse it. He also stressed the importance of cyber hygiene, urging young people to protect their digital platforms from hackers and online fraud. The British High Commission, in partnership with Busia County, continues to drive a digital access program aimed at expanding digital opportunities for vulnerable groups.
The initiative specifically targets vulnerable women, youth, and persons with disabilities, aiding them in transitioning from basic digital literacy to advanced, market-ready skills. These skills will enable participants to build digital businesses, create online content, offer technical services like phone and laptop repair, and apply digital tools in modern and precision agriculture.
The British High Commission is executing the program in collaboration with Kilimo Hakika and the UK-based Otermans Institute (OI). The program employs a blended learning approach, with 70 percent of the content delivered through AI-powered platforms and 30 percent through human trainers.
According to Juma, this flexible model permits learners to access content at their convenience without the need for the internet and allows them to repeat lessons as needed for better comprehension. He noted that this approach has significantly improved completion rates, with over 90 percent of current trainees completing their courses compared to less than 30 percent in previous traditional learning models.
