Chepkorio: The State Department for ICT and the Digital Economy is accelerating its nationwide digital transformation agenda, with a key digital hub in Chepkorio Ward of Keiyo South sub-county set for completion within the next two months.
According to Kenya News Agency, ICT Principal Secretary Eng. John Tanui emphasized the significant potential of digital skills to unlock opportunities both locally and internationally. He highlighted Kenya’s success in opening numerous international markets, urging local youth to actively position themselves to seize these global opportunities. Eng. Tanui made these remarks at Chepkorio Vocational Training Centre during the graduation of 360 youth who completed a Huawei digitruck skills program, which trained them in utilizing digital skills for commerce.
The Chepkorio hub is part of a government master plan to construct 1,450 digital hubs across all wards in the country. These facilities aim to provide young people with access to the digital arena, combat unemployment, and promote self-employment using smartphones. Eng. Anthony Sang from Konza Technopolis supported this initiative, noting the necessity of ICT in modern times as government services transition online. He encouraged residents to market local produce directly to online buyers and urged youth to teach basic digital skills to the elderly.
Eng. Sang announced the imminent completion of two digital hubs within the sub-county and challenged graduates to launch their own online shops, bypassing traditional brokers. He advised locals to use upcoming county aggregation parks for value addition. Carolyne Tanui from the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner highlighted the importance of handling personal data according to the law, urging vigilance when sharing data online.
Adams Makau, Lead Trainer for the Huawei DigiTruck program, emphasized the government’s efforts to bridge the digital divide in remote areas. He encouraged graduates to responsibly use modern tools like Artificial Intelligence to achieve professional goals. Keiyo South Member of Parliament, Gideon Kimaiyo, confirmed the establishment of ICT centers in every ward through the National Government Constituencies Development Fund, urging local youth to utilize these spaces to improve their economic prospects.
