Mombasa:Mombasa youth have been urged to enroll in Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions to acquire the necessary skills for the 60,000 jobs anticipated at the Dangote East African Oil Refinery in Lamu County. The refinery, with an investment of Sh2.2 trillion by Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote, is set to reduce East Africa’s dependence on imported fuel and is the largest private-sector investment in the country.
According to Kenya News Agency, the refinery will be Dangote’s second after his large-scale operation in Nigeria, and it comes at a crucial time when the region faces rising fuel prices due to Middle Eastern conflicts and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. Mombasa County Commissioner Mohamed Noor emphasized the need for local youth to gain skills in areas such as welding to secure these jobs.
Noor also mentioned other government projects, including significant investments in roads and affordable housing. The Sh7 billion Affordable Housing Project in Nyali Sub-county is progressing, with completion expected by February 2027.
Additionally, County security measures are being enhanced to ensure safety during the holiday season, and efforts to address land issues with squatters are underway. Governor Abdulswamad Nassir praised healthcare workers and highlighted ongoing health initiatives. Meanwhile, political leaders, including Nominated Senator Miraj Abdillahi and MPs Mishi Mboko and Rashid Bedzimba, discussed the refinery’s economic impact and political developments in the region.
