Nairobi: Four hundred and twenty-six engineers have successfully completed the first phase of Kenya Power’s Graduate Trainee Program, marking a significant step by the company to strengthen its workforce for improved service delivery. The engineers undertook a 4-month intensive classroom training at Kenya Power’s Institute of Energy Studies and Research (IESR) and will now be deployed to a five month-regional field rotation program where they will apply their knowledge and skills to strengthen operations, improve response times, and support the ongoing grid modernisation efforts.
According to Kenya News Agency, Kenya Power’s Managing Director and CEO, Dr. (Eng.) Joseph Siror, spoke during the Graduate Trainee phase one training closing ceremony in Nairobi, urging the engineers to embrace learning and commitment to service delivery, in line with the Company’s aspirations to enhance customer experience. Dr. Siror congratulated the new engineers for reaching this milestone in their careers and expressed confidence in their ability to strengthen the Company’s technical capacity to attain strategic goals.
Dr. Siror disclosed that 328 out of the 426 Graduate Engineers are specialised in Electrical, while the rest are trained in various disciplines including geospatial, mechatronics, mechanical, civil engineering, and ICT. He emphasized that their reinforcement of existing teams is expected to build a strong pipeline of professionals in Kenya’s energy sector.
According to Dr. Siror, the Graduate Engineers join the Company at a critical time, with the customer base expanding to 10.4 million customers and a growing demand for electricity. This expansion is supported by accelerated deployment of electrification projects nationwide. The CEO highlighted the importance of the engineers’ knowledge and skills in actualising the Company’s aspiration to leverage technology and innovation to provide better services and maintain its position as the leading energy utility in the region.
