West Pokot Residents Informed About Overseas Job Opportunities

Nairobi:Residents have been informed about employment opportunities abroad and the procedures to safely access these jobs, amid a growing interest among young people in working outside the country.

According to Kenya News Agency, the sensitization forums were organized by the State Department for Diaspora Affairs under the Kazi Majuu initiative. These sessions started with National Government Administration Officers (NGAOs) and local leaders, who are expected to pass on the information to the grassroots communities.

Jennifer Wanami, leading a delegation from the State Department for Diaspora Affairs, highlighted that many Kenyans are eager to seek employment abroad but often lack accurate information on available opportunities and the legal procedures to secure jobs. The initiative aims to equip Kenyans with this essential information, thus reducing cases of illegal migration and exploitation.

Wanami emphasized the importance of remittances from Kenyans working abroad as an essential source of foreign exchange, contributing significantly to the country’s economy. She urged NGAOs to utilize the knowledge gained during these forums to protect residents, especially young people, from fraudulent and unscrupulous recruitment agents.

West Pokot County Commissioner David Saruni noted the forums were timely, as NGAOs had previously faced challenges in responding to residents’ inquiries about overseas employment. The training has now provided them with the necessary information to advise the public effectively.

The State Department delegation plans additional forums at locations including Sigor in Pokot Central and various technical and vocational training institutes. This campaign aims to furnish residents with details on legitimate job opportunities, recruitment processes, and protective measures against deceitful agents, thereby assisting them in making informed decisions about working abroad.
