Nyamira: Residents of West Mugirango constituency in Nyamira County have benefited from a week-long free eye checkup courtesy of Morara Apiemi Foundation in collaboration with Douglas Onkeo, Lions Eye Hospital, Lenax Health Centre, and Light of Hope organization.
According to Kenya News Agency, Joseph Matoke Onyancha from Sironga village expressed his relief, having struggled with poor eyesight and other eye-related issues for a year without being able to afford a comprehensive eye checkup. He took advantage of the free eye care services, which included an eye examination, diagnosis, and provision of spectacles at no cost.
Matoke highlighted the gap left by current leadership in providing essential services to vulnerable communities, a gap now being filled by the goodwill of organizations and individuals. In addition to eye checkups, the initiative also offered free examinations of body pressure and sugar levels.
Ms. Mary Mosiere from Township ward in Nyamira shared her experience of traveling from Nyamira town to Kebirigo town to receive professional eye treatment. Previously reliant on non-prescribed painkillers and spectacles, she appreciated the proper diagnosis and treatment she received, recalling similar initiatives by the foundation that provided free wheelchairs to those in need.
Mr. Douglas Orutwa, a team member who initiated the program, reported a successful 5-day exercise, noting an overwhelming response from residents. Over 5000 residents participated, with at least 4000 receiving spectacles, highlighting the significant eye health challenges in the region.
Dr. Augustine Agora from Lions Hospital emphasized the high prevalence of eye issues in Nyamira, urging a purposeful intervention to educate the public on proper eye care practices. He advised reducing screen time, avoiding smoky environments, and limiting the use of chemical-laden eye makeup.
Philemon Apiemi, the proponent of Apiemi Foundation, expressed gratitude to collaborating organizations and individuals. He promised to extend the free eye care services to other constituencies within Nyamira County in forthcoming phases of the program.
