Nyamira: Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Nyamira campus is set to benefit from the government’s initiative to construct a student hostel village of 580 units. During the handing over ceremony of the construction site to Bokoh Limited, the construction company awarded by the government to undertake the works, West Mugirango Member of Parliament (MP) Stephen Mogaka acknowledged that the decision to construct hostels for KMTC students is a significant development for Nyamira town and beyond.

According to Kenya News Agency, MP Mogaka emphasized that the lack of ample, modern, and affordable accommodation has likely deprived Nyamira KMTC campus of the opportunity to expand its course offerings and student intake. With the new hostels, this challenge is expected to be resolved, enabling the institution to accommodate more students and introduce additional courses. The hostels will provide students with a modern facility, eliminating the need to rely on substandard and overpriced housing options.

MP Mogaka f
urther highlighted that the affordability of the hostels will allow students from different socio-economic backgrounds to benefit from a decent, safe, and secure living environment, enhancing their overall learning experience. He projected that the campus could see an increase to a minimum of 3,000 students and called for the expansion of the Nyamira Referral Hospital to a level six facility in collaboration with Kisii University, facilitating the introduction of medicine courses.

KMTC Principal Ms. Alice Wagunda expressed her support for the hostel project, stating that it would allow the institution to expand its course offerings and student enrollment. The completion of the hostels would address the pressing accommodation issues faced by the campus.

Nyamira County Secretary Dr. Jack Magara noted the recent completion of the doctor’s plaza complex and a specialized hospital for mental health, urging the KMTC Principal to consider offering a mental health course. This would provide students with practical
skills in a ready health facility.

Regional Lead Nyaigoti Mogeni stressed the importance of maintaining quality throughout the construction process, urging Bokoh Limited to collaborate closely with U Design, the consulting firm overseeing the project. He emphasized sourcing quality building materials locally and providing job opportunities to the local workforce.

Nyamira County Commissioner Erastus Mbui highlighted the economic impact of the hostel project, describing it as a significant economic booster for the county. He noted that the project would create numerous job opportunities for both professionals and casual laborers. Additionally, other construction projects in the area, such as affordable housing and hostels at Borabu Technical Training Institute, would also require local labor, providing further employment opportunities.

The 580-unit KMTC Nyamira campus hostel village, expected to be completed in 12 months, will feature a Sh220 million 7-storey building supervised by U Design Consultant.
