Nairobi: Webuye County Hospital, located in Bungoma County, has received a significant advancement in its diagnostic capabilities with the delivery of an artificial intelligence-enabled X-ray machine and a range of medical equipment valued at Sh20.9 million. These contributions come from USAID Dumisha Afya partners, marking a substantial investment in the region’s healthcare infrastructure.
According to Kenya News Agency, the key component of this delivery is the AI X-ray machine, which is valued at Sh14.3 million. This machine is expected to vastly improve the early diagnosis of illnesses such as Tuberculosis (TB), chest infections, and limb-related conditions. This enhancement will bolster health service delivery across 51 health facilities within Bungoma County.
Governor Kenneth Lusaka expressed appreciation for USAID Dumisha Afya’s ongoing partnership, highlighting that the investment is in line with the county’s dedication to universal health coverage. He emphasized that the new technology will facilitate early disease detection, particularly for TB, which remains a significant cause of illness and death in the county. Early diagnosis will lead to timely treatment and, ultimately, save lives.
Governor Lusaka reiterated that health is a top priority for his administration. He affirmed that the county will continue to leverage partnerships to strengthen health systems through the adoption of modern technology. He also reassured Community Health Promoters of his continued support to ensure effective service delivery at the grassroots level.
Dr. Everline Ashiono, USAID Dumisha Afya Chief of Party, stated that the AI-enabled equipment will improve diagnostic accuracy and speed, contributing to a reduction in TB-related deaths and hospital admissions. Governor Lusaka noted that these machines would aid in prompt diagnosis and treatment, thus reducing mortality rates and easing the burden on health facilities.
In addition to the X-ray equipment, USAID Dumisha Afya is also providing support for cervical cancer screening supplies. The organization is further enhancing health digitalization, data quality, and system integrity through the provision of ICT equipment and computers.
Governor Lusaka emphasized that the program is being implemented in collaboration with the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital-AMPATH partnership. He stated that the donated equipment will be distributed across 51 health facilities countywide, improving access to quality diagnostic services.
