Vihiga: Residents of Chango and Chambiti locations in Vihiga Sub-county have been cautioned against selling and taking illicit brew and drugs. Speaking during a public meeting at Lilavo Friends Church in Chambiti, Deputy County Commissioner of Vihiga Sub-county, Linet Orina, urged residents, particularly the youth, to refrain from these activities.

According to Kenya News Agency, Orina highlighted that the consumption of ‘chang’aa’ and ‘bhang’ contributes to insecurity in the area. She noted that individuals under the influence often cause disturbances in the community, hindering societal development. Orina also mentioned that drug use, particularly bhang, has disqualified many youths from joining disciplined forces due to its long-term presence in the bloodstream.

The Deputy County Commissioner expressed concern over the rising cases of defilement, incest, theft, and idle youths loitering in the evenings. She encouraged local communities to seek income-generating projects, form groups, and register with the Department of Social Services to access government funding through grants and loans.

Orina advised the youth to leverage smartphones for online job opportunities, revealing plans to construct a digital hub between Vihiga Prison and the County Commissioner’s residence to facilitate internet access.

Additionally, Alice Musila from the Office of the Attorney General in Vihiga County urged residents to register their marriages. Musila informed the community about their responsibilities, including handling land and property cases, managing Public Trustee Funds, registering marriages, and supporting public servants in disputes with citizens.
