At least twenty thousand residents in Vihiga County have benefitted from the National Agricultural and Rural Inclusive Growth Project programme.
The project which was launched in 2017 was tailor made to promote the African Leafy Vegetables, indigenous poultry, dairy and banana farming value chains in the county.
The County Governor Dr. Wilber Ottichilo, said more than 20,727 people have benefited from the initiative and encouraged farmers to move from traditional subsistence farming to agribusiness.
Ottichilo said this while meeting the project’s Community Driven Development Committees at the Maseno Agricultural Training Centre.
“The project has so far funded 840 groups in 20 wards in the county where members have been able to earn incomes to boost their livelihoods,” said the County head.
He added that agribusiness is one of the priority sectors in his development plan and therefore was determined to see the NARIGP project succeed.
The Agriculture Department Chief Officer Dominic Luvavo said the farmers were taken through capacity building workshops to equip them with the requisite skills for managing the various value chains.
The farmers requested for motorcycles to enable them transport the products to the collection centres.
