Vihiga Distributes 150 Beehives to Boost Apiculture

Nairobi: Vihiga County has intensified efforts to empower communities and enhance environmental conservation through the distribution of beehives to farmers in Kimogoi, Gisambai Ward, and Ebusiekwe Hills in West Bunyore Ward. The initiative aims to promote modern beekeeping practices, increase honey production, and strengthen the honey value chain across the county.

According to Kenya News Agency, the exercise, through which 150 beehives have so far been distributed, is being spearheaded by the County Executive Committee Member for Environment, Water, Energy, Natural Resources, and Climate Change, Dr. Jairus Amayi. In addition to the beehive distribution, Dr. Amayi received the first consignment of honey processing equipment at the upcoming honey refinery in South Maragoli Ward, Vihiga Sub-County.

The facility is expected to support value addition, enhance product quality, and support the commercialisation of honey produced within the county. The apiculture countywide project aims to build community resilience and contribute to climate change mitigation, environmental conservation, and the creation of sustainable livelihood opportunities for residents across the county.
