Vihiga: The County Government of Vihiga, in collaboration with the Rani Ramchandani Foundation, donated supportive devices to over 100 Persons with Disabilities (PWDs). Vihiga Governor Dr. Wilber Ottichilo extended the goodwill gesture to promote the rights and well-being of individuals with disabilities at Mbale Municipal grounds during this year’s International Day for Persons Living with Disabilities.
According to Kenya News Agency, Governor Ottichilo emphasized the importance of PWDs registering with the National Council for Persons with Disabilities to access government support and financial opportunities. He further directed the County Department of Gender, Culture, Youth, and Sports to create a database of PWDs in Vihiga for better coordination and support.
The Founder of the Rani Ramchandani Foundation, Ms. Rani Ramchandan, encouraged other organizations to join in providing mobility support to PWDs, emphasizing the need for inclusivity and support for the disabled community.
CECM for Gender, Youths, Sports, Culture, and Social Services, Dr. Ruth Agesa, highlighted the department’s commitment to addressing disability issues by recruiting disability officers and designating an office block for disability-related matters.
Supportive devices such as wheelchairs, tricycles, crutches, canes, frames, and sticks were distributed to the PWDs present at the event, with Vihiga County Director of Disability Services, Ruth Oyier, urging the beneficiaries to seize the opportunities available to them and strive for self-reliance.
The event showcased the county’s commitment to fostering disability-inclusive societies and advancing social progress for Persons with Disabilities in Vihiga.
