Laikipia: Leaders from Laikipia County affiliated with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) have initiated a campaign to increase the party’s popularity ahead of grassroots elections scheduled for next month. The initiative is led by Woman Representative Jane Kagiri and other leaders who are aiming to secure various positions in the upcoming elections set for March 7.
According to Kenya News Agency, Kagiri emphasized the importance of choosing leaders who prioritize regional development, stating, “We won’t allow it to be used during elections but on development we are sidelined, we will stick on where we can benefit as a region. We should not make any mistake again when choosing our leaders.” Kagiri also voiced her support for President William Ruto’s potential second term, crediting him with restoring security in Laikipia.
Despite its strong showing in the 2022 General Election under the leadership of President Ruto, UDA has seen several prominent leaders, including those elected under its banner, switch allegiance to the Democratic Citizens Party (DCP), led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. The initial round of grassroots UDA elections, which commenced nationwide last month, faced challenges in Laikipia County, marked by poor coordination and lack of enthusiasm, prompting a repeat of the exercise next month.
