State to Invest Sh21 Billion in Kilifi Affordable Housing Project

Kilifi: The national government will spend Sh21 billion on infrastructure development under the Affordable Housing Project in Kilifi County this year, the area County Director of Housing, Moses Kiptui announced Monday. Speaking during the site handover for the construction of 340 housing units at the Weru Vocational Training College (TVC) at Baolala in Malindi Sub County, Kiptui said the county would benefit from 11 affordable housing projects comprising 8,036 units at a cost of Sh18 billion.

According to Kenya News Agency, he added that eight educational institutions, including Pwani University and several local TVCs, would receive hostel facilities to accommodate 4,380 students at a cost of Sh1.8 billion, while 11 modern markets would be built across the county at a cost of Sh560 million. He told residents and local leaders attending the handover ceremony that some projects were underway, while others were at design and procurement stages.

Kiptui said that hostels at the Weru TVC situated in Langobaya division would cost Sh159.5 million and that the project would feature five-story blocks, which would, apart from accommodating 340 students, also house student study rooms, shops, a mini market, and food kiosks. Kiptui said most TVCs in the county were experiencing student shortages because of lack of student accommodation, hence the need to construct hostels in the institutions in order to boost student enrolment.

Malindi Member of Parliament Amina Mnyazi attributed the implementation of a number of development projects to her closeness with President William Ruto and other national government officials. She noted that her constituency is benefiting from a significant number of development projects after she abandoned her hardline stance against the Kenya Kwanza government, and urged residents to support the government for accelerated growth.

‘Politics will come later, but development is needed now. The President of Kenya today is William Ruto, and I am working with him so that Malindi can move forward,’ she said. The MP acknowledged that although she had not previously supported President Ruto, her stance shifted after the rapprochement between Ruto and the late ODM leader Raila Odinga. She pledged to continue engaging the President to ensure Malindi receives its fair share of national resources.

‘This affordable housing project here at Weru is part of our rightful share of development,’ she said. Addressing divisions within the ODM party, Ms. Mnyazi distanced herself from internal conflicts, insisting that leadership matters should be resolved through party structures. She also criticized the opposition for lacking a clear presidential candidate and agenda ahead of the next general election. She further urged Malindi residents to avoid participating in the opposition-led demonstrations planned for February 16, 2026, encouraging them instead to spend the day with their families.
