Nairobi: Preparations for the 2026 International Day of Peace (IDoP) celebrations have commenced in Uasin Gishu County. Stakeholders are advocating for enhanced peace campaigns in anticipation of the 2027 General Election.
According to Kenya News Agency, the planning committee, which includes county peace stakeholders, National Government Administration Officers (NGAOs), and private-sector peace actors, convened to establish the groundwork for the event scheduled for September 21. This year’s International Day of Peace will be observed under the theme, ‘Invest in Peace For Everyone, Everywhere, Every Day.’
The stakeholders highlighted the annual event’s role in promoting unity, dialogue, and collective action towards building peaceful communities. Lucy Towett, Senior Assistant County Commissioner for Kibulgeny Division in Soy Sub-County, chaired the meeting on behalf of the County Commissioner. She noted the significance of this year’s celebrations as Kenya gears up for the 2027 General Election. Towett stressed the need for intensified peace campaigns to educate residents on the importance of maintaining peace, emphasizing that peaceful coexistence is crucial for sustainable development and human well-being.
Towett urged stakeholders to leverage the celebrations to enhance community dialogue and encourage residents to adopt peaceful conflict resolution methods. The stakeholders also highlighted the necessity of grassroots initiatives, community engagement, and daily acts of compassion in fostering lasting peace. They emphasized that peace-building is a continuous responsibility that involves government agencies, communities, civil society organizations, and other actors.
The planning meeting was attended by Uasin Gishu County Peace Monitor Viola Sang, County Peace Committee Chairman Rev. Timothy Kipchirchir Bamai, Disability Services Coordinator Hellen Tuwei, and County Director of Gender Tecla Biwott.
