Nairobi:Uasin Gishu The County Government of Uasin Gishu held a deaf awareness and sensitization session at St. John’s Sigowet Primary School in Kiplombe Ward, Turbo Sub-County, marking the second day of International Deaf Awareness Week 2026.
According to Kenya News Agency, the session aimed to educate students on deafness, the rights of deaf individuals, inclusion, and the importance of embracing those with disabilities. The event was attended by the Uasin Gishu Deaf Community, led by Chairlady Rosemary Saina, along with officers from the Department of Gender and Social Protection and the partner organization Edmund Rice.
Representing the Chief Officer for Gender and Social Protection, Marion Birgen, Ms. Caustencia Tanui led the county’s delegation. A sign language interpreter, George Lubuga, facilitated the session. Tanui emphasized the importance of understanding that deafness is not a barrier and that inclusion begins in the classroom to combat stigma.
Headteacher Mrs. Peris Kamau welcomed the initiative, noting its role in teaching students empathy and the importance of supporting each other, regardless of abilities.
Rosemary Saina, through an interpreter, called for greater societal acceptance, highlighting the potential of deaf individuals and the need for understanding, accessible communication, and equal opportunities.
The activities, organized under the leadership of Governor Dr. Jonathan Bii Chelilim, are set to culminate in a grand event on Friday, September 25, featuring a procession from Town Hall to a Home Craft.
