Eldoret:The County Government of Uasin Gishu has pledged to assist emerging self-help groups in evolving into investment cooperatives by providing technical guidance, training, and financial support to enhance grassroots wealth creation.
According to Kenya News Agency, during a meeting with the Galilee Self Help Group members in Eldoret City, County Executive Committee Member for Cooperatives Philip Chebunet emphasized Governor Jonathan Bii’s dedication to fostering sustainable cooperative societies. Chebunet highlighted that the governor’s cooperative agenda focuses on enterprise funding, capacity building, and technical support.
Chebunet encouraged the group, which is in the process of registering as an investment cooperative, to maintain its savings culture and adopt sound investment practices following formal registration. He pointed out that well-managed cooperatives can generate wealth, improve livelihoods, and stimulate local economic growth.
County Director of Enterprise Development, Kipleting Mengich, urged the members to continue their consistent contributions and assured them of ongoing support. Mengich mentioned that the department would provide continuous training on cooperative management, investment strategies, and accessing the County Enterprise Fund.
Drucilla Cherogony, Director of Cooperatives, stated that the registration process would be prioritized once the group fulfills all requirements. She noted that this would enable members to benefit from government-supported cooperative programs.
John Saina, Chairperson of the Galilee Self Help Group, shared that the group was established a few months ago with a vision of transforming into a full-fledged investment cooperative. He reported that members have collectively raised approximately Sh1 million, with each contributing at least Sh50,000 monthly towards their investment plans.
County officials view this engagement as part of a larger initiative to strengthen community-based enterprises and deepen economic empowerment at the grassroots level.
