Mombasa: The National Government has intensified the crackdown on illicit brews in Trans Nzoia County, with security officers arresting five suspects during an operation conducted in Maili Saba, Kipsaina, and Namakoe. County Commissioner Hassan Allasow Hussein said the suspects were arrested during a crackdown targeting illegal brewers and distributors of illicit brews.
According to Kenya News Agency, Allasow stated that the operation would be sustained across the county as the county security team moves to dismantle illicit alcohol brewing and distribution networks. He emphasized the ongoing efforts to arrest individuals involved in the illegal alcohol trade and warned traders against using unofficial routes to transport illicit products into the county.
Triza Mwangi, an officer from the National Authority for the Campaign against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA), highlighted the health risks posed by some alcoholic products entering the country from neighboring countries. She cited specific examples, such as Johnny’s Gin, which did not comply with Kenyan standards under the Alcoholic Drinks Control Act.
Mwangi pointed out that the law prohibits the packaging of alcoholic drinks in plastic bottles and restricts sales in containers of less than 250 milliliters. She urged residents to be aware of the contents of the brews they consume and encouraged them to report suspected illicit brewers and distributors to authorities.
The authorities continue to call for cooperation between the public and security agencies in the fight against illicit alcohol, noting the serious health implications and dangers associated with the consumption of these products.
