Nairobi: Trans Nzoia County government and the Rotary Club are finalizing a collaborative arrangement to tackle maternal health challenges and poor sanitation. The plans for this partnership were recently disclosed following a courtesy call made by a Rotary delegation, led by Rotary Club President Dr. Geoffrey Kasembeli and Rotary District 9215 Governor Mr. Saad Rahman, at the county headquarters in Kitale.
According to Kenya News Agency, Trans Nzoia County Secretary Truphosa Amere emphasized the county government’s commitment to the deal, highlighting that the ICT sector will also benefit from this collaboration. Ms. Amere remarked on the long-standing relationship with Rotary in health initiatives and expressed the need for a formal Memorandum of Understanding. This document will define the roles and expected outcomes of the partnership.
Ms. Amere noted that water, sanitation, and hygiene are persistent issues for many residents, with cases of open defecation still reported in some areas. She stressed the importance of addressing these challenges in collaboration with partners to achieve sustainable development. The county aims to convert an idle ICT hub into a library as a quick-win project while working on larger plans concerning maternal health and the health system.
Plans include forming a task force comprising county officials, Rotary members, health workers, and residents to guide the process. A monitoring system will also be established to track progress and ensure accountability once the agreement is signed.
Rotary Club District Governor Mr. Rahman highlighted Rotary’s significant presence in Western Kenya under District 9215, which comprises Rotarians, Retractors, and Interactors. The district was formed after splitting the old District 9212 into two separate districts. Mr. Rahman emphasized Rotary’s mission to serve and its focus on peace building, WASH, economic empowerment, environmental management, maternal and child health, disease prevention, and education. He mentioned recent projects, including a water and sanitation initiative near Motosiet, affirming the organization’s commitment to continuing these efforts.
