Kisumu:A devastating road accident at Awasi market on the Kisumu-Kericho Highway resulted in the deaths of three family members from Kopudo village in Kabonyo-Kanyagwal ward, Nyando Sub-County. The victims were returning from a funeral in Songor village, Muhoroni Sub-County, when their motorcycle collided with a truck.
According to Kenya News Agency, the accident claimed the lives of 17-year-old Croscent Akwino, her 23-year-old sister-in-law Christine Atieno Owino, and a 5-month-old infant. The motorcycle, which was carrying five people, was struck by a truck attempting to avoid a crash. Akwino died instantly, while Atieno was declared dead upon arrival at Awasi Catholic Mission Health Centre.
Another child, aged one, and the motorcycle rider, both related to the family, survived the crash with injuries. The bodies were taken to Othoo Funeral Home in Nyando for preservation and postmortem. Police are investigating the incident.
Florence Adhiambo, who lost her daughter, daughter-in-law, and grandson, expressed her devastation and shock over the tragedy. She recounted receiving the heartbreaking news thirty minutes after expecting a call confirming their safe arrival home.
Rolex Owino, whose wife, sister, and child died in the accident, shared his grief. He thanked divine intervention for sparing his one-year-old son, who suffered injuries but survived. Owino described his late wife as a jovial and hardworking woman, and his sister as a diligent student preparing for exams.
The grieving family has appealed for emotional and financial support to provide a dignified farewell for their loved ones. Owino emphasized the heavy burden he faces in arranging the funerals and expressed his hope for assistance.
