Transmara: Three suspects have been arrested following fresh land and boundary clashes along the Nkararo-Enoretet border in Transmara West, Narok County that erupted over the weekend. Confirming the arrests, Narok County Commissioner, Kipkech Lotiatia said a massive manhunt was in progress for more suspects who have gone into hiding following the scuffles.
According to Kenya News Agency, the clashes have prompted the deployment of security officers to the affected areas as authorities move to contain further violence and establish what triggered the latest confrontation. Mr. Lotiatia confirmed that investigations had commenced, with security agencies conducting operations along the troubled border.
The County Commissioner, speaking at Nkararo in Transmara West Sub-County during a security patrol, ruled out claims that the incident was sparked off by land disputes, cattle rustling, or livestock theft, indicating that preliminary investigations suggested the incident arose from a minor personal disagreement that was later amplified through rumors. Security personnel had conducted intensified patrols in the area for the past four days following reports of youths chasing and fighting each other while using arrows, clubs, and stones.
Lotiatia commended security teams from Transmara West and Transmara South for containing the situation, saying the area was currently calm and secure. The renewed violence has rekindled concerns over the long-standing unresolved land dispute involving the Irwashi Nkishu and Isiria communities, with residents saying that repeated confrontations have continued to put lives at risk. The border has experienced recurring confrontations, with competition over land and other resources contributing to tensions between communities. Local residents have called for the identification and resolution of disputed boundaries to prevent further clashes.
The County Commissioner described those involved as hooligans and criminals who had no genuine reason to engage in violence, adding that the three suspects would face charges of incitement and spreading false rumors. Investigations are ongoing to establish the actual circumstances surrounding the violence and apprehend other individuals suspected of instigating or participating in the unrest.
Narok County leaders, through Governor Patrick Ole Ntutu, have called for immediate calm and dialogue following the skirmishes. A high-level team led by Governor Ntutu visited the troubled region, meeting with local elders and security teams to lower the tension. Political leaders pledged to foster harmony and address the root causes of the skirmishes.
