Karamani:Persons with disabilities (PWDs) in Tharaka-Nithi County are advocating for the decentralization of disability assessment services and simplified registration processes. They argue that the current cost and travel distance to access these services hinder eligible individuals from benefiting from government support programs.
According to Kenya News Agency, the challenges were discussed during a meeting at Karamani in Magumoni Ward. Christine Gatiria, a candidate for the Tharaka-Nithi Women Representative seat in the 2027 General Election, organized the meeting to address the issues faced by PWDs. She brought together six PWD groups from three locations, provided food donations, and highlighted the difficulties surrounding registration and certification processes.
Gatiria emphasized the need for leaders across Tharaka-Nithi to collaborate with government agencies and PWD organizations to identify and connect individuals with available support programs. She advocated for Social Health Authority (SHA) waivers and other interventions to alleviate the financial burden of healthcare access for vulnerable individuals. Additionally, she urged authorities to bring assessment services closer to remote communities.
Charles Gitonga, the Chairman of Karamani PWDs, highlighted the challenges faced by caregivers, particularly those supporting individuals who are entirely dependent on others. He called on government representatives to ensure disability funds and support programs reach the intended beneficiaries, stressing the need for improved identification and distribution mechanisms.
Lucy Mutwiri, another PWD representative, expressed concerns about the lack of involvement in implementing and monitoring disability programs. She urged for greater participation of PWD representatives to ensure grassroots challenges are addressed, thereby improving access to services and support.
