Amagoro: The second edition of the Teso North Cross-Country, scheduled for November 22 at Chelemuk Comprehensive School, anticipates drawing around 5,000 participants from across the county.
According to Kenya News Agency, Assistant County Commissioner Charles Cheseto announced at a media briefing held at Hotel Levantes in Amagoro that this year’s pre-trial Chepsaita marathon will be uniquely sponsored by Farouk Kibet, the Personal Aide to President Dr. William Ruto, with a cash award of Sh1 million.
Cheseto emphasized that the event, which operates under the theme ‘Run for an end to Gender-based Violence,’ will offer scholarships of Sh10,000 to the top 100 runners. Additionally, he highlighted the participation of 16 African countries in the Chepsaita Marathon in Uasin Gishu. Cheseto clarified that the Teso North Cross-Country is a non-political event aimed at addressing the rising instances of Gender-based Violence (GBV) in Busia County.
Highlighting the event’s commitment to education, Cheseto mentioned Bernard Okomol, who received a full scholarship at Chepsaita High School due to his outstanding performance in local and county-level races. Last year’s Chepsaita marathon awarded substantial cash prizes, with winners in both the men’s elite and the 10km races receiving Sh300,000. Scholarships and over Sh20 million in cash prizes were also allocated to support needy children in the Chepsaita community.
Sarah Martha, Executive Director of Dhamira Moja Foundation, stated that the organization is spearheading efforts to eradicate GBV in the county. The foundation plans to conduct 16 days of activism starting November 22, focusing on both GBV awareness and talent promotion among the youth. Martha acknowledged that many GBV cases remain unreported despite rising incidents.
Roseline Wandaki, Executive Director of FIDS, reported an alarming increase in drug abuse, suicide, and depression in the county. Teso North Deputy County Commissioner Solomon Kitai expressed gratitude to sponsors and stakeholders for incorporating GBV awareness into the marathon, urging for the event to remain apolitical.
NACADA County Coordinator Zeka Wekesa announced plans to support the event by sponsoring a roadshow in December to educate the youth on avoiding alcohol and substance abuse. Olunga Paul Ekwe, CECM for Sports, Culture, Gender, and Tourism, described GBV as rampant in Busia, calling for increased awareness and intervention.
Athletics Kenya Teso North Chairman Oroni Josephat discussed challenges such as transport for athletes, advocating for government and sponsor support to nurture athletic talent in the region. The event is sponsored by organizations including Kenya Red Cross, NACADA, Dhamira Moja Community Foundation, and FIDS, alongside Athletics Kenya and local government bodies.
