Tech-Driven Farming Initiative Launched to Enhance East Africa’s Food Security

Nairobi:A new commercial farming model, UpYield 4 Africa, has been launched in Nairobi, utilizing weather intelligence and digital technology to transform smallholder agriculture across East Africa into a climate-resilient, productive, and bankable sector.

According to Kenya News Agency, the initiative involves a collaboration between Austrian agricultural technology firm Pessl Instruments, AgriMet Data Kenya, Sidian Bank, and local telecommunications giant Safaricom. These entities aim to deploy 15,000 METOS weather-monitoring stations across the region, providing smallholder farmers with real-time weather and soil data through Digital Farm Advisors and mobile applications.

During the launch, Austria’s Ambassador to Kenya, H.E. Dr. Simone Knapp, emphasized the importance of real-time, precision data in modernizing farming practices and enhancing food security. The project utilizes Austrian export finance instruments to facilitate its rollout over the next two years.

The initiative’s framework will assist farmers in making informed decisions on planting, irrigation, pest management, and fertilizer application, replacing traditional methods with data-driven strategies. Josef Winklmayr of Pessl Instruments highlighted the cost-saving benefits of precision data, particularly in managing irrigation amid fluctuating power and fuel prices.

Sidian Bank is addressing the challenge of credit and insurance access for rural farmers by offering a closed-loop financing and risk-mitigation framework. This approach uses equipment, weather data, and guaranteed harvests as collateral, rather than personal assets, to secure financial facilities. The bank also provides bundled crop and livestock insurance products to mitigate climate risks.

Safaricom’s Acting Chief Financial Services Officer, Boniface Mungania, noted the critical role of connectivity and digital reach in the initiative, ensuring smallholders gain direct access to digital agricultural services and government subsidies.

Advisory Board Member Dr. Hans Jöhr encouraged stakeholders to adopt regenerative agricultural practices and digital tools, making farming commercially attractive to younger generations. The UpYield 4 Africa initiative plans to expand throughout Kenya and the broader East African region, establishing a comprehensive digital ecosystem for smallholders and related partners.
