International Labour Organisation (ILO), has distributed over 1,500 kilograms of Sudan grass seeds to some 30 fodder farmers from Dadaab, Township and Fafi Sub-Counties in Garissa to boost their livestock production.
Speaking during the distribution exercise, Garissa County director for livestock Dr Haret Hambe said the seeds will increase milk and meat production in the county at a time when the region is plagued by drought.
The seeds are being distributed through the project, ‘Strengthening the Livestock Market Systems in Garissa County through Value Chain Approach.
The fodder will enable pastoralists to have adequate access to pasture, and ensure consistent and nutritious livestock feed to mitigate against severe drought.
Sudan grass is preferred over other varieties for this region because its seed germination rate is above 95 per cent.
It also only requires between 9-10 kilograms per acre to yield between 27-30 tonnes per acre annually.
Once planted, the first harvest happens on the 60th day after sowing, then subsequent harvests follows after every 30-35 days.
