Nairobi: Over 700 students from Tom Mboya University, who are destined for job opportunities in Germany, have been trained on prudent financial management. The students have also been enrolled in German language classes and are expected to travel to Germany starting in June 2025.
According to Kenya News Agency, an organization known as 20X Entrepreneur has embarked on training these students through a joint venture between the Kenyan and German Governments. The students are learning the German language as a prerequisite for accessing the jobs available abroad.
Lack of financial management skills has been identified as a significant challenge facing employees in the job market. The 20X Entrepreneur Chief Executive Officer, Eunice Mburu, highlighted that many young people who earn substantial amounts of money may end up squandering their earnings. She emphasized that the training is aimed at providing the students with entrepreneurial and financial management skills.
Mburu stated, “These students will go to Germany for job opportunities through the government programme. Big money job opportunities can easily lure youngsters to lavish lifestyles without investment. We are training these students on prudent utilization of funds and entrepreneurship.” She added that the youth who utilize the knowledge gained from the training will boost remittances to the country from the diaspora.
“We want the students to embrace a savings culture and promote entrepreneurship and investment in Kenya. This will also help to create jobs for Kenyans,” Mburu said. The students were also trained on how to identify opportunities and utilize them effectively.
The Principal of the German Language Programme at Tom Mboya University, Irene Kwamboka, explained that the training is preparing the students for the job market. “We are soon releasing these students for the job market, which is full of challenges. This training has come at an opportune time and it will assist the students in making prudent investment decisions,” Kwamboka said.
One of the students, Bill Owuor, shared his experience, stating, “What has stood out for me is the savings aspect. The programme will shape our future lives.”
