Special Needs Learners’ Safety Boosted with Sh3m Security Wall

Gianchere: Gianchere Special School in Kisii Central Sub-County in Kisii County has received a major security boost after the National Fund for the Disabled of Kenya constructed a 218-meter long perimeter wall around the school at a cost of Sh3 million. Speaking during the commissioning of the perimeter wall, NFDK Chairman, Prof Francis Kibera, emphasized the project’s critical role in ensuring the safety, security, and protection of the 84 learners and resources within the institution.

According to Kenya News Agency, Prof. Kibera urged the school management to continue engaging well-wishers, donors, and stakeholders to secure additional funds for the development of more infrastructure. He also encouraged the institution to apply for small grants of up to Sh300,000 from the Fund to facilitate small projects.

Prof Julia Odhiambo, a member of the NFDK board of Trustees, expressed optimism that the wall would enhance the security of the special children, who are mainly hearing impaired and incapable of speech. Prof Odhiambo highlighted the previous dangers posed by the porous boundaries, which allowed easy, unauthorized access to the school premises.

Dr Mike Kiswili, a Trustee of the Fund, urged teachers to collaborate with learners in implementing the Competency-Based Education system. Dr Kiswili noted that the new curriculum would equip learners with disabilities with skills in creativity, critical thinking, communication, and innovation, aligning with industry needs.

Cecilia Mbaka, another Trustee, praised the school management for ensuring the project was delivered to quality standards. She acknowledged that the funds were utilized prudently according to specifications, ensuring that the National Fund for the Disabled of Kenya achieved 100 percent of their target.
