Nanyuki: Traders in Laikipia County are set to move into a new state-of-the-art modern market constructed by the government at a cost of Sh360 million. The facility, which is currently 95 percent complete, is expected to accommodate more than 1,000 traders once completed in December this year.
According to Kenya News Agency, traders who are set to benefit from the project have welcomed the project, saying the modern facility will provide them with a more dignified and conducive working environment compared to where they are currently in, whose structures are in a dilapidated state. Nanyuki Old Market chairman noted that the project was a significant development for the region, providing a boost to traders and offering a long-lasting facility that will benefit future generations.
The facility will feature 720 stalls, 20 shops, a lactation room, and other social amenities designed to improve the welfare of traders and customers. The project is well designed, addressing issues such as water disconnection from local water companies, and it will be solarized to support a 24/7 economy.
The project, which was launched in March 2024, has been lauded by residents, revealing that it had also created hundreds of employment opportunities for local residents during its construction. Consolata Wanjiru, a worker at the construction site, highlighted that the project has provided job opportunities, enabling workers to support their families.
For Mohamed Muriuki, the jobs generated by the project have provided young people with a source of income and helped dissuade them from drugs and substance abuse.
