Self-Discipline Emphasized as Key to Athletic Success by Athletics Kenya Official

Kericho:Athletics Kenya (AK) Kericho County First Vice Chairman Gabriel Kiptanui has stressed the importance of self-discipline for athletes aiming to win races and achieve long-term success. He conveyed this message to participants following a training session at the Kericho Teachers Training College grounds in preparation for the upcoming Betika Cross Country meet on October 10.

According to Kenya News Agency, Kiptanui highlighted that while talent and motivation might ignite an athlete’s journey, sustained success relies on disciplined training rather than emotions. He emphasized the importance of adhering to a structured routine, citing world marathon record-holder Eliud Kipchoge as a prime example of someone who has achieved excellence through disciplined habits and a consistent training schedule.

Kipchoge is currently engaged in a seven-continent marathon tour, known as Eliud’s Running World, aiming to compete in marathons across all continents. He launched this initiative at the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon in South Africa in May 2026, where he finished 16th. Kipchoge then participated in the Porto Alegre Marathon in Brazil, finishing 12th, and plans to continue his tour in Australia on October 11.

Kiptanui, who also serves as an athletics coach, advised athletes to avoid comparing themselves with others and to focus on personal improvement. He noted the upcoming Betika race on October 10 will be highly competitive, featuring over 500 athletes in the 10km men’s race. He stressed that self-discipline is crucial for maintaining pace and focus under pressure.

He encouraged athletes to emulate Sheila Chepkirui, the reigning New York City Marathon champion, who maintains a rigorous training schedule despite her successes. Her career, which began with victories in the 1500m and 3000m events, includes notable achievements like winning gold at the 2005 World Youth Championships, the African 5000m title, and the New York City Marathon in 2024. Kiptanui praised Chepkirui’s commitment to setting higher goals and working diligently to achieve them.

The training session was attended by more than 20 athletes, both seasoned and emerging, who were urged to adopt discipline, consistency, and mental toughness as they strive for success in their running careers.
