Embu: Security agencies in the Eastern Region have assured investors in the transport sector of a secure business environment following a series of anti-government, fuel, and Gen-Z protests that have periodically disrupted business since 2024. Eastern Regional Commissioner Jacob Ouma warned criminal elements against exploiting peaceful demonstrations to block transit routes, destroy property, or loot businesses.
According to Kenya News Agency, Ouma addressed transport sector players from Embu County in a meeting organized by NCBA Bank. He highlighted that the transport sector had been significantly impacted by civil unrest and economic challenges stemming from the protests. Ouma cautioned demonstrators against targeting businesses during protests, emphasizing that acts of lawlessness would not be tolerated and perpetrators would face legal consequences.
‘We have a duty to ensure that investments are protected against acts of criminality so that they can continue thriving and achieve the economic objectives of the investors,’ he stated. Ouma further warned transport operators against engaging in or facilitating illegal trade, noting that vehicles involved in contraband goods, narcotics, or human trafficking would be seized, and their owners prosecuted.
He urged vehicle owners to remain vigilant and ensure their drivers did not engage in criminal activities or collaborate with offenders, warning that such conduct could lead to the loss of their investments. ‘Our intention is to weed out rogue operators from the sector while protecting those doing legitimate business from unfair competition and infiltration by criminals,’ he added.
Ouma assured investors that security agencies would continue collaborating with stakeholders in the transport industry to safeguard businesses and maintain law and order along major transit routes in the region. He reiterated the Government’s commitment to creating an environment conducive to business growth and protecting legitimate investments from criminal activities.
NCBA Bank Deputy Director for Asset Finance James Karinga pledged the bank’s commitment to supporting investors in the transport sector through partnerships and integrated financial services.
