Amman:The national chairman of the Seafarers Union of Kenya, Capt. Peter Munga, has called for strict adherence to the union’s constitution as a special conference is proposed for November 19 to elect officials for vacant positions.
According to Kenya News Agency, Capt. Munga addressed union members during a meeting at Ronald Ngala Hall, emphasizing the chairman’s role in ensuring the constitution is fully observed. He stated that the constitution serves as the union’s guide, and it is his duty to enforce its provisions.
Capt. Munga highlighted that the constitution dictates the Annual Conference should occur in September, and members must receive at least four weeks’ written notice from the General Secretary. A special conference is suggested for November 19, 2026, to fill roles such as Secretary General, Assistant Chairman, and Treasurer, ensuring each office-holder has a clear mandate.
He also reiterated the constitutional requirements for membership fees, with an admission fee of Sh200 and monthly subscriptions of Sh100 for unemployed members and Sh500 for those employed. Capt. Munga encouraged the union to process all registrations, forms, and membership cards following these rules.
Regarding finances, he stressed the importance of transparency in handling members’ contributions, stating that every financial transaction should be recorded, reported, and available for inspection. Furthermore, Capt. Munga mentioned the need for the union to address its office rent of approximately Sh120,000 and clarify its office status. Until the special conference takes place, all decisions, appointments, and expenditures should align with the constitution.
