Kirinyaga county: Sagana Industrial Park is nearing commissioning following a positive assessment by a multi-agency team of national government officials. The visit aimed to verify the park’s progress and identify any remaining gaps in the project.
According to Kenya News Agency, the assessment occurred shortly after the government directed that County Aggregation and Industrial Parks (CAIPs) with more than 90 percent completion should be fast-tracked for operationalization. Kinguru Wahome from the State Department for Trade led the delegation, expressing satisfaction with the progress. “The last time you were here, about seven months ago, the level of achievement of this CAIP was around 82 percent, and today the indicative number is around 94 percent,” Wahome stated.
Kirinyaga is among the top eight counties in implementing the CAIP, with the project close to commissioning by the president. However, challenges like electricity connection, water treatment, and road infrastructure remain. Deputy County Commissioner of Kirinyaga West Sub-county, John Mbugua, emphasized the project’s potential to create employment and highlighted the teamwork involved in reaching this stage.
Kirinyaga County Executive Committee Member for Trade, Calbert Njeru, noted the visit was crucial in addressing outstanding infrastructure issues. The project is one of Governor Anne Waiguru’s flagship initiatives aimed at promoting industrialization in the county.
The multi-agency team included officials from various State Departments. The assessment coincided with a benchmarking visit by Nyeri County’s Department of Trade and Industries, which aimed to learn from Kirinyaga’s experience in implementing the CAIP programme. Nyeri CECM for Trade Lucy Kiogura said the visit provided practical insights for their own CAIP implementation.
