Kisumu: Safarlink Aviation has officially launched a new flight route between Kisumu and Entebbe, marking a significant step toward enhancing regional connectivity and economic integration within East Africa. The inaugural flight took off from Kisumu International Airport, highlighting the city’s strategic importance as a business hub in the Lake Victoria Basin.
According to Kenya News Agency, Kisumu Governor Prof. Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o emphasized the city’s commitment to fostering a conducive environment for investment and innovation. Speaking through his Deputy, Dr. Mathew Owili, during the launch event, the Governor noted that Kisumu’s proximity to other East African markets, including Uganda, reinforces its role as a center for trade and policy dialogue.
The launch event, attended by key figures such as Kenya Airports Authority Chair Caleb Kositany and Safarlink Aviation CEO Alex Avedi, underscored the city’s growing stature. The Governor pointed out that the new flight route comes at a crucial time, co
inciding with the opening of the Lake Victoria Basin Commission’s head office near the airport, further cementing Kisumu’s position as a regional business hub.
Governor Nyong’o highlighted that the new route would significantly reduce travel time between Kenya and Uganda, improving the movement of goods and people. He emphasized the broader impact on regional integration, economic growth, and connectivity for East and Central Africa.
With infrastructure upgrades like the new state-of-the-art air traffic control tower and ongoing runway expansion, Kisumu International Airport is poised to handle increased air traffic, attract international airlines, and support diverse routes. These developments are part of a strategic investment in the region’s future, aiming to boost tourism, exports, and overall competitiveness.
The Governor also announced plans for cold rooms and warehousing facilities at the airport to facilitate the export of agricultural products, further enhancing the region’s economic prospects. He
urged residents to seize the opportunities presented by the new connectivity to strengthen trade ties and elevate Kisumu as a regional powerhouse.
The daily flights from Kisumu to Entebbe, priced at Sh. 14,000 one way, are expected to foster social, cultural, and economic exchanges, aligning with the region’s expanding markets and trade frameworks. Additionally, Safarlink has plans to introduce a new connection between Nairobi’s Wilson Airport and Entebbe in 2026, further enhancing regional travel options.
Data from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics indicates that the Lake Region Economic Bloc, encompassing 14 counties, contributes significantly to Kenya’s GDP, particularly through its agricultural sector. The expansion of Kisumu Airport is anticipated to yield substantial benefits for these counties, reinforcing the region’s role as a key economic and food security hub for Kenya.
