Nairobi:President William Ruto has committed to allocating a specific budget to promote 50,000 teachers, addressing persistent concerns about career progression within the teaching profession.
According to Kenya News Agency, this announcement was made during the World Teachers’ Day celebrations held at Kasarani, Nairobi. The proposed budget aims to enable deserving educators to advance professionally and tackle the issue of career stagnation.
The event gathered teachers from the basic education sector, their professional organizations, and other stakeholders to discuss challenges affecting the teaching profession. President Ruto emphasized the government’s commitment to improving learning conditions, mentioning plans to construct 23,000 classrooms nationwide to alleviate overcrowding due to the increasing student population.
Additionally, the government is in the process of hiring more teachers to tackle staffing shortages and is implementing measures to support educators and enhance education quality. President Ruto also addressed concerns from Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers regarding their administrative roles and leadership opportunities, assuring them that these issues would be considered.
The World Teachers’ Day celebrations served as a platform to acknowledge the vital contributions of teachers to Kenya’s education system and to discuss the necessary steps to improve their welfare, career development, and working conditions.
