Red Cross and Machakos Fire Teams Boost Readiness with Floods Drill

Machakos:The Kenya Red Cross Society Machakos Chapter and the Machakos County Fire and Rescue teams have completed a two-day joint water rescue training at Athi River Dam in Mavoko Sub-County. This drill is part of their preparations for the anticipated El Niño rains.

According to Kenya News Agency, the exercise brought together first responders from both agencies to enhance their coordination and equip them with practical life-saving skills for the expected heavy rains. Faith Kavuli, Machakos County Red Cross Coordinator, emphasized the importance of hands-on skills in managing flood emergencies.

Kavuli explained that the training focused on essential skills such as boat operations, maneuvering, and basic rescue techniques using ropes and sticks. The county has also initiated community sensitization efforts regarding flood safety, targeting areas prone to flooding and clearing drainages in several towns.

Residents in low-lying areas have been advised to move to higher ground to prevent disaster. Kavuli warned against risky behaviors during floods, highlighting the dangers of even shallow moving water. She urged residents to avoid walking through or driving across flooded areas and to keep children away from floodwaters.

A multi-agency response system has been activated by the Red Cross and county government, and Kavuli urged residents to promptly report emergencies. The hotline numbers 0720808900, 0715068863, 08006000016, or the KRCS toll-free line 1199 are available for quick assistance.

The county fire and rescue officers noted that the joint exercise improved their readiness, with coordinated boat operations and rope rescue techniques being crucial for evacuating families trapped by floods along the Athi River. The training is part of broader El Niño preparedness measures, including public awareness campaigns in flood-prone sub-counties.
