Londiani:The construction of an airstrip at Londiani Forest Station in Kipkelion East Constituency aims to enhance forest protection and introduce opportunities for tourism, investment, and emergency response in the area.
According to Kenya News Agency, the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) organized a public participation forum at the Kenya Forestry College to engage with residents and stakeholders regarding the proposed project. Key attendees included Kipkelion East MP Hon. Joseph Cherorot, Londiani Deputy County Commissioner Mohammed Ephraim Hassan, Kenya Forestry College Principal Francis Musyimi, and County Forest Conservator James Kwambai.
The airstrip, set to cover approximately 30 acres at Mount Blanket Block within Londiani Forest Station, is strategically located to serve 22 forest blocks within the Mau Forest Complex. Mr. Kwambai highlighted that the airstrip would significantly improve the Service’s ability to monitor and protect forests, particularly in response to wildfires and emergencies.
The facility is expected to enhance coordination among several agencies, including KFS, Kenya Wildlife Service, National Police Service, and others. Kwambai emphasized the project’s potential impact on forest management and emergency response, urging community support.
With a projected cost of Sh306 million, the airstrip is expected to improve forest accessibility, promote ecotourism, and foster local investment, creating opportunities for the community.
Deputy County Commissioner Hassan stressed the importance of public participation, allowing residents to understand and contribute their views on the project. He encouraged collaboration between the community and government for successful development.
MP Cherorot noted that the airstrip is part of broader development efforts in the constituency, including ICT hubs, a referral hospital, and affordable housing projects. He praised President William Ruto’s development agenda and urged continued community support for these initiatives.
Following the meeting, stakeholders visited the proposed site at Londiani Forest Station to assess the location, marking a step forward in the project’s implementation, expected to benefit both Kipkelion East and the wider Kericho region.
