Kapenguria:The government has initiated the construction of a Sh230 million student hostel complex at the Kenya Medical Training Institute (KMTC) Kapenguria Campus, aiming to alleviate the housing shortage faced by students. The project will add a 580-bed capacity hostel for the 2,000 students enrolled, most of whom currently depend on costly private accommodations.
According to Kenya News Agency, President William Ruto announced plans to build a total of 2,500 student hostels across Tertiary Vocational Education Training Institutions (TVETS) in West Pokot County. He also promised the construction of university hostels for an upcoming university in the area.
The president emphasized the importance of using housing funds to provide students with modern learning environments. He committed to the construction of 20 additional classrooms at a cost of Sh40 million and directed the Principal Secretary’s office to ensure the project is completed. Plans are also underway to enhance the institution’s security through proper fencing.
President Ruto highlighted the government’s investment in Universal Health Coverage, noting that 270,000 residents are registered under SHA, with funds directed to various health facilities in the county. He pointed out that the shift from NHIF to SHA ensures broader funding distribution to smaller health facilities.
The value of health training was stressed, with Ruto acknowledging the critical role of KMTC in producing healthcare professionals essential for Universal Health Coverage. He revealed efforts to increase the number of KMTC lecturers and ensure all students benefit from the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB).
The president urged local Members of Parliament to back legislation ensuring equitable access to education at KMTC and other institutions, based on intellectual capability rather than financial status. He advocated for educational equity to be realized nationwide, with legislation expected to be discussed in Parliament by January.
Accompanying President Ruto were National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruiyot, West Pokot Governor Simon Kachapin, and other local MPs.
