Nyanza: The National Police Service Commission (NPSC) is conducting a fact-finding mission in the Nyanza region due to increasing concerns over mental health challenges faced by police officers. The commission’s delegation, led by Chairman Amani Yuda Komora, began their mission with a visit to the office of Nyanza Regional Commissioner Flora Mworoa.
According to Kenya News Agency, this visit is part of a broader initiative to assess working conditions and understand the challenges confronting officers in the area. The tour is a follow-up to amendments made to the National Police Service Commission Act, signed by President William Ruto in November 2025, which emphasized enhanced psychosocial support and counseling services within the police force.
Dr. Komora highlighted that the commission is responding to worrying reports from police commanders regarding the prevalence of mental health issues among officers. He emphasized the need for a collective effort to tackle these challenges, noting that the commission is prioritizing the implementation of the revised law to improve access to psychosocial support services nationwide.
The commission is also considering boosting personnel and resources in Nyanza and other regions, depending on budgetary provisions. This initiative aims to gather firsthand insights from officers, enabling the commission to tailor policy interventions more effectively.
Dr. Komora stated that the NPSC is collaborating with the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) and other government agencies to address various welfare concerns of officers, including remuneration, working conditions, and mental health. He stressed the importance of enhancing psychological support systems to ensure that officers remain fit and capable of performing their duties effectively.
