Kiganjo: Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has advised new officers joining the National Police Service to pursue further learning in order to adapt to the changing needs of the current society. Addressing more than 4,000 recruits at the National Police College in Kiganjo, Kanja stated that while the basic training offered at the college prepares officers for the entry into the service, more upskilling is needed from individual officers to confront emerging global trends.
According to Kenya News Agency, such skills will not only equip new officers with expertise to tackle complex criminal webs driven by modern high-end technology but also help officers to remain clearheaded in serving the public. Kanja expressed confidence in the training the recruits have received, preparing them to handle various security threats such as banditry, technology-driven crimes, organized criminal gangs, and gender-based violence. However, he encouraged continuous improvement of skills for better service delivery and career growth.
The Inspector General also highlighted the significance of the upcoming pass out parade, describing it as a critical turning point for the nation in the lead-up to the general election next year. Kanja emphasized the role of the National Police Service in ensuring a peaceful election process and urged the recruits to adhere to standing orders and applicable laws, maintaining neutrality and loyalty to the Constitution and the law.
The recruits were also advised on maintaining their well-being, both physically and psychologically, due to the demanding nature of policing. Kanja stressed the importance of utilizing available psychosocial support systems and managing finances wisely to avoid distress.
NPS Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat addressed the recruits on the responsible use of social media, urging them to exercise personal discretion to avoid harming the force’s image. While acknowledging the constitutional freedom of expression, Lagat reminded the recruits of their accountability and the need to serve professionally within the law.
The event was attended by other dignitaries, including Campus Commandant Nyale Munga and Nyeri County Commissioner Josephat Biwott.
