Narok: The government has vowed to take firm action against political leaders, individuals, and groups blamed for perpetuating violence among communities living along the Kisii-Narok border. Narok County Commissioner Kipkech Lotiatia and his Kisii counterpart, James Kamau, emphasized that such actions threatening peace and undermining development in the region will not be tolerated.
According to Kenya News Agency, the administrators spoke during an emergency security meeting at Nyabitunwa along the Kisii-Narok border. This meeting followed an incident where two people were killed and several others injured after fresh clashes erupted along the Kisii-Transmara border. The violence left farms and businesses affected, with several properties reportedly torched as confrontations between groups of youths from the neighboring communities spread to different points along the boundary.
Lotiatia stated that security officers must ensure peace is restored in the affected areas, warning residents against possessing weapons, engaging in incitement, or participating in criminal activities. He urged the youth and members of the affected communities to maintain peace and avoid actions that could further escalate tensions.
The latest clashes disrupted transport, trade, and other essential services across the border, with residents calling for increased security to prevent further violence and restore normalcy. Lotiatia affirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening security at the grassroots level and directed security personnel to apprehend individuals involved in criminal activities and dismantle criminal gangs operating in the area.
Kisii County Commissioner Kamau noted that authorities had identified some of the individuals believed to be behind the violence and were taking action against them. He urged parents and community leaders to take responsibility for restraining youths and helping to prevent further confrontations.
Community elders, including Julius Ole Kilusu and Julius Matongori, called on elders and community leaders to use their influence to encourage young people to resolve disagreements peacefully rather than resorting to violence. Elders play an integral part in uniting communities, and responsible civic engagement is essential for inclusive development and lasting peace.
