Over 4,000 families in Loitoktok Sub County benefitted from relief food donated by Shree Oshwal Community from Nairobi.
While overseeing the food distribution exercise at Kimana trading Centre, Loitoktok Deputy Commissioner Wesley Koech lauded the organisation for the gesture.
Koech noted that the area residents had suffered immensely due to the prevailing drought, the worst ever in over 40 years.
The Deputy County Commissioner said the drought has adversely affected local pastoralists who have so far lost most of their animals, thus affecting their livelihoods and education of children.
However, according to Koech, the sub county is currently receiving light rains, whose benefits will be realized early next year.
He urged residents to embrace modern farming methods including practicing feedlot and irrigation as opposed to rain fed agriculture.
Shree Oshwal Community coordinator Kiran Shah said despite the low rains currently pounding the region, it was still too early for the residents to realize any meaningful benefits, hence the need for continued supply of food.
Shah called upon other well-wishers to come on board and give assistance to the needy.
Apart from giving out relief food, the Shree Oshwal community is also focusing on tree planting in line with President Dr. William Ruto’s recent directive on embracing the same, as one way of mitigating climate change in the country.
At the same time, the Director, Action in Focus, Mary Thatcher, said her organization had partnered with Oshwal Community to fast-track provision of relief food in Loitoktok.
Thatcher said Action in Focus had already supplied 850 food kits for a few families in the sub county, but after teaming up with Oshwal Community and the local administration, they were able to reach more needy families.
