Optimism as Kenyans mark heroes day

Kirigiti Stadium hosts Mashujaa Day celebrations for the first time
The Historic Kirigiti stadium that was recently refurbished to international standards will for the first time host this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations.
Organizers of the national event, chaired by Rafael Gitari, told KNA in an interview that the new stadium has a sitting capacity of 16,000 people.
The stadium was upgraded a cost of Sh600 million fully funded by the government and was commissioned two years ago by then Sports cabinet secretary Amina Mohammed and Kiambu governor James Nyoro.
New Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi and a host of other dignitaries including current and former Members of Parliament are expected to attend the ceremony that is usually graced by senior citizens as the nation celebrates her heroes and heroines.
“This being a new government and everything we definitely expect big numbers as people want to experience the new 16,000-seater facility and are also eager to hear what the new governor has to say about what his new administration has in store for them” says Gitari.
Gitari said the gates are open to all, adding that there will be no restrictions or invitations for the national event since it is a public affair.
“There will be no time restrictions as the venue and the gates will be open as early as 7:00 am in the morning and anybody who wants to get the best seat is welcome to come as early as possible,” he said
Residents interviewed expressed optimism that the new county boss would lay out the plan he highlighted in his manifesto during the campaigns to lift the living standards of the poor and vulnerable
John Ndegwa, a 32-year-old who sells pineapple at Kangangi market after his music career flopped, says he was hopeful the hustler government would make good its promise anchored on the “Bottom-Up” economic model to support small businesses.
Similar expectations were also echoed by 38-year-old Justin Mwangi who runs a retail shop in Kiambu town. He decried the high cost of living and hopes the rising prices of basic commodities would be addressed to make life bearable.
Jane Muchoya, a 45-year-old green grocer, says she will stay away from the festivities and fanfare claiming she has nothing to celebrate due to the high cost of living.
But the single mother of two was enthusiastic about the proposed Hustler Fund set to be rolled out by December saying it could make a difference.
