Nyamira Assembly Clerk Nabbed Over Alleged Sh 30 Million Tender Fraud

Nyamira: The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested Duke Simeon Onyari, the Clerk of Nyamira County Assembly, over alleged corruption and loss of Sh. 30 million in the construction of the Nyamira County Assembly office block. Speaking to the press at the EACC South Nyanza Regional offices in Kisii town, the Regional Manager, Alfred Mwachugha, stated that investigations had revealed irregularities in the procurement and award for the construction of an office block to Jetta Builders Limited by the Nyamira County Assembly.

According to Kenya News Agency, the Regional Manager noted that after investigations, it was established that the County Assembly of Nyamira had recommended the award of the tender to Jetta Builders, which was not the lowest evaluated bidder. The Director of Public Prosecution had approved charges against seven individuals, including Leonard Nyamasege, Deputy Clerk and Director of Finance and Accounts, and David Nyarango Ombego, Director of Legal Services.

Additional individuals involved include Joyce Onyiego, the Director of Monitoring, Evaluation and Development, Engineer Josphat Oruru, Chief Officer, Roads and Public Works, and Infrastructure Officers Eric Ayuka and Simon Ogecha. The Regional Manager added that one suspect was arrested on 19th March and arraigned in a Nyamira court under case MCCGCR No. E001 of 2026, Republic versus Duke Simon Onyari and seven others.

Mwachugha mentioned that Onyari and his co-accused had approached several courts seeking anticipatory orders, but their requests were denied. Consequently, Onyari is to be arraigned in court on Thursday. The Regional Manager urged the remaining five suspects to present themselves to EACC for processing and arraignment in court.
